This summer, visitors to The Master Builder’s will once again have the chance to witness history being uncovered on our doorstep.
 

Following the success of last year's archaeological excavation at Buckler’s Hard, the Buckler’s Hard Shipyard Trust returns to continue its exploration of the historic slipways where some of the Royal Navy’s most famous warships were built, including HMS Agamemnon, Lord Nelson’s favourite vessel. During the 2025 dig, archaeologists uncovered remarkably well-preserved timber structures from the original 18th-century shipyard, alongside artefacts that offered new insight into life and shipbuilding along the Beaulieu River.
 

The excavation will return throughout July and August, with archaeologists, students and volunteers working on site to reveal more of Buckler’s Hard’s fascinating maritime story. Visitors are welcome to observe the work in progress and learn more about the shipyard that built 55 vessels for the Royal Navy during its heyday.
