Great location - service much improved from last year -We stayed here in January for a post-Christmas restorative break.
The setting is wonderful, overlooking the Beaulieu River by an oxbow meander where the watercourse wanders through lakelets and marshy land which seem popular with birdlife. There's a marina just by the hotel and Buckers Hard Village & Museum just beyond it, harking back to maritime life in Nelson's time. The delightful Beaulieu Village (it's pronounced beeyoolee if overseas visitors are unsure) is just a few minutes away and the open country of the New Forest National Park just as close in the other direction.

We had a comfortable and well-appointed room in the newish Henry Adams wing; no views at all from the room, but prospects from the lounge - genuine log fire crackling away - were fine.

Our meals (DB&B package) were thoroughly enjoyable with good food carefully prepared and a reasonable selection of wines by the glass.

Trip Advisor reviewers last year commented on lack of staff and poor attitude from those that were around. We had no problems with this at all; on our first evening the friendly waitress was alone and under pressure but she simply phoned the restaurant manager who helped out for the rest of the evening. All the staff we met were friendly and good-humoured and eager to help.
The New Forest area has long been a favourite of ours and is just an hour or so from our Oxford home. The Master Builders hotel may well come to serve as a "bolt hole" for brief breaks throughout the year!

Beautiful location - Stayed here in autumn. A very picturesque location looking over the estuary with lots of boats and yatchs. Room was clean and well decorated. Very good food in restaurant and characterful bar. A pleasant walk into Bulieu along the river and in woods (Just long enough to feel you have had some exercise!)

Elegance, comfort and lashings of good food - this hotel and its restaurants are a hidden treasure. Hidden beside a river inthe depths of the New Forest the rooms are simple and yet every need is catered for are exceeded. The food is uniformally excellent and well cooked; Great steaks and fish, mega breakfast that sets you up for any day you may choose.

Families seem very welcome and well looked after, tho we were alone.

3 night getaway - lovely staff and rooms. Rooms not the corporate standard furniture, it was individual and stylish. Nice touches such as lovely propper coffee in the room and a complimentary welcome vodka. All round great experience. I will be returning!

An old ship-builders village revived, full of history in an amazing setting. You really feel you are on holiday! Away from everywhere...Close to the new forest. Good restaurant. Museum on site.

We stayed for the 4-night Christmas break (2011) and it was excellent and exceptional value. Very friendly, helpful staff and a fantastic attention to detail to make our stay memorable. A great way to spend Christmas.

Friendly, warm & excellent unpretenious hotel - we too stayed on the Christmas package and echo the above review. The quality of the service is superb. The food excellent from breakfast to the a la carte menu. The ploughmans in the bar at lunchtime was the best I ever had with home made scotch egg and yummy cheddar. As dog owners we felt very comfotable in the bar with the log fire and our worn out mutt asleep. The extra touches included dog treats in the Christmas stocking were a nice touch. I enjoyed chatting with the chef after hours to get some cooking tips, all the staff seemed to be happy in their work and the new manager has obviously worked his magic. Do yourself a favour and book ourself a break there!!!!!

Excellent service & first class location - My husband and I have just returned from staying at this lovely hotel over the Christmas period on their festive package 24 - 27 December. One of the nicest touches we thought was on Christmas morning we awoke to discover a stocking filled with goodies had been hung outside our door. It was a lovely surprise. Christmas lunch was delightful and a very enjoyable relaxed experience. If you are looking for a quiet relaxing break then this is the hotel for you. It is in a fabulous location in the heart of the New Forest. My husband and I enjoyed every minute of our stay and are planning on a return visit in the very near future. The staff and the manager, Demir are all excellent. Demir is unique for his personal attention to detail. We found all of the staff to be friendly, welcoming, helpful and very professional. Nothing is too much trouble for them. The food is superb and the rooms warm, very comfortable and homely. We stayed in room 7 in the Henry Adams wing. The turn down service is lovely - when we returned to our room following dinner we found that all the tea/coffee/water, bathroom toiletries had all been replenished. It is a very relaxing hotel but the service is impeccable. My husband and I stay at many hotels throughout the year but we have to say the warm, friendly atmosphere of this hotel is one of the best we have stayed in. We loved it. We will most certainly be back.
Room Tip: If you want a good view overlooking the river book the rooms in the main building. If you are bringing a dog you will be in the Henry Adams wing.

Relaxing, good value & good food - Wedding anniversary the week before Christmas is always a bit difficult to fit in an hotel break. Spent one night at The Master Builders on package which included dinner and breakfast and it wasn't the most sumptious of hotels, but the staff were very helpful and friendly, our room (no 19) was large with a four poster bed and very comfortable. Our evening meal was definitely above our expectations (had read a bad review of the food on trip advisor .) The starter of sea food platter was enormous, big bowl of prawns,2 really chunky slices of salmon, couple pieces of mackerel and really good portion of haddock gougons with brown bread - delicious.
Main course I had pheasant with game chips again very good, The breakfast was very good with lots of variety. After breakfast walked along the river to Beaulieu a really pretty village, where we did some christmas shopping. In the afternoon we visted the Beaulieu motor museum which is really interesting and I am not a petrol head!Went to the main house, home to Lord Montagu and his family, we were given mulled wine on arrival , a nice little surprise. Although we were only away for less than 24 Hours it seemed longer - in the nicest possible way!!

What a change - well ive been coming here for years as i have family who live in the area and it is the closest place for us. I begrudgingly have continued to come back over the years and simply did due to the proximity. What a change though. Wow completely different, and here is how........

Nothing was too much for them. I had an amazing waiter, (he was wearing a suit with black hair and foreign accent) it felt like my own personal one, even though the restaurant was very busy, he then served me at breakfast and arranged alot of special food as i have a strict diet. So friendly so knowledgeable, finally a waiter who knew his menu, his wine and how to match them!

I stayed in the main house this time and enjoyed it very much, the room was clean, plenty of coffee and tea making facilities and a lovely bed. Ill be back in february and hope this change is a permanent fixture!
Room Tip: ask for main house its rooms are bigger generally and have more chance of a view!

A real delight - In a fantastic setting at Bucklers Hard, this is a superb 'find'. Great restaurant, separate traditional and friendly bar, lovely rooms and all set in beautiful scenery with the river and woodlands on your doorstep - let alone the other New Forest attractions.
The standard rooms are in the separate Adams block - a covered walk way connects to the main hotel about 20m away..... These rooms are all well furnished with all the necessary amenities. The beds are very comfortable and in my experience the rooms are all quiet and condusive to a good nights sleep.

Perfect - one very enjoyable experience, the staff were very friendly and very entertaining, look forward to going back again soon.

A gem of peace and relaxation - Nestled on the side of the river and close to the Beaulieu Estate this beautiful small hotel offers peace with comfortable accomodation.
The staff were friendly and efficient; our room with separate sitting room had wonderful views with comfortable bed/arnchairs and an interesting shower over the bath.
We went to the bar for an evening meal which was delicious, prompt and friendly service.
Breakfast in the resturant proved to be very tasty, perfectly cooked with excellent service.
Before leaving we walked along the riverside watching the birds and rivercraft, stunning. In all a very enjoyable break.

Birthday Weekend Treat - I booked this weekend trip for my wifes birthday treat and all in all was not dissapointed. We had excellent weather, lovely location and a pleasent stay.
Room was good although bed was a little soft, but then nothing beats our own beds.
We ate at the hotel all weekend and enjoyed all that we ordered. Now i have seen a couple of reviews from people that stayed at the same time and i am of the opinion that they were not pleased with the service. That american guy obviously thought he was at the ritz.and therefore did not have to do anything for himself. The water jug was empty and had to be filled which they did for him.The steak which i ordered was lovely.full english was spot on and my wife who is not very adventurous with her food had the butternut squash soup which she enjoyed. The waitresses did come out looking puzzled as to where the toast was going sometimes, but i thought the maitre d was very jovial and pleasent to talk to,some attributes that some of the guests did not possess.
You dont get magnolia walls and woodwork in a hotel which has character and nautical history.I dont own a posh bone in my body but i really do feel that a certain few who stayed at the same time are a little up their own back gate, and if they wanted the ritz then they should have gone there.
This hotel is a great place to stay and a good base for travelling around the new forest area. The staff are polite and wear smiles on their faces and my wife was very pleased with her birthday treat away

Trip Advisor - 28th November

Secluded getaway - the hotel lived up to expectations. The welcome from the staff was excellent and service throughout our stay was of a high standard. I wanted a secluded break for a couple of days, with quiet surroundings, the ability to explore the New Forest with little travel and good food in the evenings. The Master Builders fitted the bill admirably and I wouldn't hesitate in returning.

Stunning location - We had a lovely room in the old part of the hotel. Very stylish, clean, rustic and comfortable. The service was excellent and the food was perfect. Excellent value for money. It is what is says it is and therfore we were not dissapointed. Would recommend this to anyone wanting a relaxing stay and a lovely location.

A relaxing autumn stay
The hotel with its historic and beatiful location provided a very comfortable base for walking the new forest and Beaulieu areas. A very friendly and relaxed atmosphere with good food and quality accomodation.

Fantastic location, facilities and matched by the staff! Spent a night at The Master Builders Hotel in the 'Victorious' suite - it was absolutely fantastic, clean, comfortable with some great finishing touches. The bar and restaurant further enhanced the experience and the staff were attentive, knowledgeable yet not in your face every 5 minutes.

Would we stay again - hell yes, just looking for the next opportunity to do so.

Good work team - keep it up.

Nice Little Hotel in a Beau-tiful Place (get it?) - This small 3-star hotel is located in one of England's most beautiful and historic locations. We spent a pleasant weekend there. The hotel staff were friendly and helpful. The restuarant offers lovely views over the Beaulieu river. We found the dinner to be good, but not outstanding although the service was good. Breakfasts are excellent.

Trip Advisor - 3rd September

Lovely room, gorgeous setting, very relaxing - I nearly didn't stay here because of some of the earlier reviews on Trip Advisor, but am so glad we did as it was lovely.

We stayed for one night in a deluxe room called "Victorious" (number 19) in the old part of the hotel. It was large, quirkily but stylishly furnished, and had stunning views over the garden to the river. It is apparently also the only room to have a small single bed room attached, which our friend stayed in for extra cost of £50 / sharing our bathroom. Was a lot cheaper that way than him getting a totally separate room, and it was very private.

The reception when we arrived could not have been more welcoming - they were fast to check us in, and then the manager himself showed us to our room. Yes, there was one part with some narrow steps and low beam to navigate, but that's the norm for old hotels and I found it part of the charm.

We spent the afternoon having a wander through the museum nearby, and then took a boat trip on the Beaulieu river, before settling in for a drink and BBQ meal in the pub. At breakfast the next day we ate in the restaurant which was great. Lovely sunlit room, comfy seats in a sort of booth, and the food I ordered (eggs benedict) was excellent. The buffet wasn't huge but there was a good range of things - and then you could order from the cooked menu as well so we felt spoilt for choice.

Overall, we really enjoyed our stay, and if we ever have reason to stay in the area again we'll definitely return.

Loved the revamped decor in the hotel bedrooms in the annex and the lounge and dining room. Excellent situation overlooking the river, and we enjoyed sitting outside in the garden. A serene location.

Late Rooms - August

We had a very nice stay in Master Builders, very authentic building with loads of history. Beaulieu river on the doorstep for a very quiet and relaxing atmosphere.
Breakfast and dinner was ok. Our room was I think one of the largest in the house, 15m to walk in.... Very nice and comfortable bed also. Only thing you have to keep in mind is... the height of the doorways!

Pleasant short break - we stayed here for two nights in August 2011, wanting a location in the New Forest, and this hotel looked especially special with its riverside/marina location. And it did look very idyllic, if quite isolated which perhaps was the only drawback, as there were only a handful of places to eat/drink at in nearby Bealieu, this hotel is actually in a place called Buckler's Hard. We had to drive to Lymington, about 25 mins away through the national park to have a wider selection of places to eat at. The Hotel was nicely presented, obviously a maritime theme going on since three of Nelson's ships used at the Battle of Trafalgar were built here. Excellent customer service from arrival to departure, pleasant, friendly staff, obviously trained well which is a breath of fresh air! Good food (complimentary breakfast), although I felt wine was heavily over priced like at so many establishments today. A very good standard hotel which would we would readily recommend, just beware of the local ponies/cattle which roam freely on the estate.

Trip Advisor - 19th August

Lovely hotel in a great setting - thank you to James the Manager who squeezed us into a room for two nights at short notice after we checked out of our other awful hotel near Beaulieu after one night. The Henry Adams wing is quite modern and not as 'quaint' as the rooms in the main house but they are all beautifully decorated and clean and the hotel and location make up for the smallish rooms.
The food was excellent and service was great, we had no complaints of anyone who served us either at reception or the restaurant and found the staff at breakfast and in the evening at the restaurant very helpful.
We stayed here nearly 10 years ago and 'forgot' about it for this trip but now we have remembered it we will be back.
Room Tip: If you can afford it and book well enough in advance then the rooms in the main house are larger and 'quainter'.

Trip Advisor - 17th August

My husband and I stayed on the 6th and 7th of August as it was a gift break away for my birthday. When we arrived and went to reception we were greeted by 2 female members of staff who were very polite and extremely helpful and we were then shown to our room. We had room 14 and the room was very clean and comfortable (and they kept us well stocked with t-bags thanks for that). We ate in the hotel restaurant both evenings and Ashley and the rest of the restaurant staff couldn't of been more helpful, nothing was ever too much trouble for them. The food we ate was to die for and so major compliments to the chef (the lemon posset OMG delicious).
When we had breakfast each morning we were given a great choice on the menu and again the staff were very helpful. There is plenty of things to do around the hotel such as a 2 mile trail through the forest (which was so relaxing) and it was great to sit by the harbour feeding the ducks and just watching the world go by.
What more can I about The Master Builder's House Hotel apart from all the staff were very polite, helpful and they made us both feel so welcome.
We loved our weekend away and didn't want to leave and we will come back again and we shall be making this hotel our little getaway from it all treat.
So a huge Thank You to all the staff for making our weekend so relaxing and we'll see you next year.

The Master Builders at Buckler's Hard is a magical setting brimming with Old World charm. We spent two days at the Master Builders in July. It was very clean and comfortable and is a perfect base for exploring the New Forest and the Beaulieu area. (Tudor village, wild ponies, Motor Museum and Manor House). The hotel is built at Lord Nelson's shipyard and is full of history. The warships which fought at the battle of Trafalgar were built here. Both nights we ate dinner on the hotel terrace and took in the spectacular surroundings. The fresh organic food comes from the local farmers. The full English breakfast (included with the room) was lavish and there was real ground coffee in the rooms. (Not always easy to find in England.)

Trip Advisor - 6th August

Thanks to The Master Builders team for a great stay on Sunday. Great food and such a nice place to chill out and have a cool beer in the sunshine. Even did the kayaking on the river as well. Will be back.

Facebook - 3rd August

The setting is magnificent, with a beautiful area to sit out with spectacular views and space for our children to play in, that importantly was close enough for us to keep an eye on them but far enough away to give us our own time and not interfere with other guests enjoyment. The rooms were adjoining and also perfect for the children. The beds were very comfortable and showers excellent...The style, design and look of the place is also rather special and I noted conference facilities which I had not known about before but will certainly follow up on as the place offers an especially English experience. Food was very good especially breakfasts.

Trip Advisor - 2nd August

Loved this hotel, perfect romantic weekend. Brisk winter walks followed by roaring fire and afternoon GnTs in the bar. Restaurant was fabulous, great seasonal game menu acompanied by good wine selection. Walk to Beulieu along the river. Beaulieu house was very nice and the motor museum had some fine examples not so sure about the Bond collection!
Room Tip: Pacific, lovely double aspect room. Additional anti-room with Single bed. Above the bar so a little noisy.
